The Lido aims to be a Net Zero Carbon and highly sustainable project.

A Net Zero Carbon Building aligned to UK Green Building Council standards by:

o   Reducing demands for energy through exemplar fabric efficiency, guided by Passivhaus principles.

o   Delivering energy from 100% renewable energy sources through solar thermal and ground source heat pumps.

o   Lower pool temperatures to reduce energy demands and heat losses.

o   Ecological cleaning and shower room products used throughout, minimises ecological impact

o   Low chlorine content minimises impact on sewerage as well as being healthier for users.

o   All site material will be directly reused to create banking and landscaping. Meadow flower seed mix to be spread in area between saunas and changing rooms with designated pathway to reduce risk of footfall across flowerbeds and timber bridges could be installed over reedbeds

o   Using timber, for the structure and fabric. Timber not only sequesters carbon but is also lightweight therefore it reduces the size of foundations. The structural frame can be formed in glulam or Cross Laminated Timber (CLT)

o   The foundation solution is likely to be piled to reduce the required excavation. The piles can also be combined with ground source heat pumps.

The principles of Circular Economy will be adopted where the value of all materials used will be maximised across their lifecycle and designed for reuse at the end of life.  We will create a ‘building passport’ to provide a digital log book for all materials used, and ensure materials are specified with minimal environmental impacts.

Pool water be treated to have low chlorine content to minimises impact on sewerage as well as being healthier for users. SUDS drainage and reedbeds will support natural habitats.

A Net Biodiversity Gain will be delivered to the site through ecologically rich native wildflower planting, green roof and green walls to the restaurant. The design will also include insect hotels, bat and bird boxes to encourage additional wildlife. There is also potential for managed hedgerows along site boundary/landscaping around the restaurant and children’s play area to cover fencing.
